About Plaid Friday
Calling all holiday shoppers! Find great deals on unique gifts, and keep your dollars local on November 23.
For the fifth year in a row, local retailers in the Twin Cities will participate in an alternative campaign to Black Friday, known as Plaid Friday.
Plaid Friday is a national network of local, independent businesses joining together to encourage their communities to support small retail stores while holiday shopping. By promoting each other we can create a strong community of independent shops that celebrates the creativity and diversity of local, independent businesses in St. Paul and Minneapolis. Plaid Friday started in Oakland, CA in 2010 as a fun alternative to “Black Friday”.
Plaid Friday encourages consumers to put their holiday gift dollars back into the local economy by shopping at stores in their own communities. Buying local all year round has intrinsic rewards, but the incentive during the biggest spending season of the year is especially sweet. Imagine a pleasant shopping experience with great customer service and unique gifts.
As one satisfied customer put it last year: “My traditional shopping frownie face was turned upside up on Plaid Friday and I wore a great big smile all day long. Shopping independent is definitively going to be my new holiday tradition.”
